facemash FAQ
Is facemash opt-in?
Yes. Nobody’s photo is on facemash unless they signed up with their own school email, uploaded a selfie of themselves and ticked the box agreeing to be shown and ranked. We never take photos from social media or anywhere else. Uploading someone else’s photo means a permanent ban.
Who can see my photo?
Only people who log in with an email address from your school, and the site’s admins when reviewing reports. People at other schools can’t see your photo, your ranking or your reports. Your display name appears with your photo. Photos are stored privately and shown through links that expire after 10 minutes. No student’s photo, name or ranking is on any public page or in search engines.
How does ranking work?
You see two photos from your school and click the one you think is hotter. Each click is a matchup. Ratings use Glicko-2, a chess-style rating system: beating someone with a high rating counts for more than beating someone new, and a rating gets more certain the more matchups it has. Lists are sorted by a cautious score (the rating minus twice its uncertainty), so a few lucky wins don’t put a newcomer on top.
You need 10 matchups before you appear on a list (a school can set a different number). Each list (everyone, men, women) stays hidden until at least 10 people are ranked on it, so a small school never shows “#3 of 3”. At schools with selfie verification, the top spots of the everyone list are kept for verified profiles. Other users never see who voted for whom.
How do I delete my account?
Go to your profile page, tick “Yes, delete everything” and press “Delete my account”. Your photo, profile, ranking, the votes you cast and the reports you filed are deleted at once. If you never finished setting up a profile, delete your login from the setup page you see after logging in. If you can’t log in, email support@facemash.page from your school email address and we’ll delete everything within 10 days.
Is this Zuckerberg’s Facemash?
No. The original Facemash was a 2003 Harvard site that used students’ photos without asking them. facemash.page is an independent, consent-based take on the idea: opt-in, school email only, 18+, your school only, and you can leave at any time. It is not affiliated with Meta or Facebook.

Which email do I use?
Your school’s student email address. Each school’s page above says which addresses work there; staff and alumni addresses usually don’t. Leave out any “+” part. We email you a one-time code to log in, so there’s no password.
Is it 18+?
Yes. facemash is only for people 18 and older, and you confirm you are when you join. Report anyone who looks under 18; if we learn a user is under 18, we delete the account.
How do I report a photo?
Every photo on the voting page has a “report” link. Pick a reason (for example “This is my photo / not them” or “Looks under 18”) and send it. After three reports from different people, the photo is hidden until an admin reviews it. Admins can restore it, remove it, or ban the account. If someone uploaded a photo of you, report it or email support@facemash.page; we act on these first.
What do you keep about me?
